Many expecting parents struggle with what to name their newborn child, especially if it is their first one. This is normal and every new parent goes through this on their way to selecting the perfect baby name.

Make a Master List
If you haven't already done so, start writing down names from every source you can find. Books, magazines, TV, movies, radio, friends, and family can be great sources to begin with. Once your master list is done, it's time to start the fun part! Get together with your spouse and start researching all of the names on your list. Put them in alphabetical order and look at meanings, origins, how well the names fit with your last name, and any other criteria that will help you decide. You should be able to come up with ten final names or less that you both agree on, and have origin and meaning that are important to you.
Unusual vs. Traditional Names
It has become trendy lately to give babies bizarre and unique names. We encourage being different and unusual when selecting a name but there is a point where the name becomes 'too far out there'. A great example of this is to look at pop culture and specifically what celebrities are naming their babies. One can look at naming data for the past few years and see the trends as well, with more uncommon names showing up all the time. It is very important to select a name not only to reflect your morals and values, but one that the child can live with for the rest of their life. Think about what you are going to name this child, and how it will affect them growing up. We all know kids can be cruel, and an odd name can be the starting point for a rough childhood. Traditional names can often be too common, but with some research you can definitely find one that is the best choice for everyone.
Making the Final Decision
You will have plenty of time to think about your final list of names and make a decision. Think it through, get the approval of your friends and family and have fun in the process. You will know that you made the right choice when your baby is born and you say their name for the first time. It will just feel right!
