Canada is known to be a multi cultural country treating people from different cultures equally. So how come over the last few years we are being discriminating against people based on the color of our money? The hundred dollar bill is no longer being accepted at many retail outlets. They have the nerve to put signs in the windows that read “we do not accept hundred dollars bills, sorry for the in convince”.
The retailers say that there are a lot of counterfeit $100 bills floating around, and they do not want to get caught with one. Is that the customer’s problem or theirs? All they have to do is invest in a machine that verifies the bills, buy a certain marker that identifies, or for the real cheapies teach their employees what marking to look at.
According to the law the $100 bill is considered legal tender; it is marked right at the bottom of bill, and must be accepted as currency by all retailers. The Canadian mint as far as I know is not run by the business people, but the Government who decides what is acceptable legal tender. When the government chose to put out of circulation the $1000 bill, that was a Governmental call, based on the concerns of the Canadian people.
If the retailers do not like the $100 bill, then they have the right to lobby the Government to stop producing them. They do not have the right to break the law by not to accepting them. As Canadians would it not be time to start standing up for ourselves again, not worrying so much about being politically correct, but being honest and changing the things that will really help our quality of life.
The $100 bill is just of the many things Canadians are allowing themselves to be bullied with, take a stand, we have the right to speak up.
