In the corporate world, first impression is important. Hiring managers are busy creatures so you must immediately get their attention before someone else does. You basically want to tell them to stop and notice you because you’re indispensable to the company and are just what they need.
This is why your resume should communicate all the right things to your prospective employers. Consider your resume your advertisement and marketing device. Ask yourself, if you were the job interviewer and you were reading your own resume, would you hire yourself?
- Organize your information in a logical fashion and keep descriptions clear and to the point. Include as much work experience as possible, even if it obviously doesn't relate to the job you area applying for.
- Use a simple, easy-to-read font. Keep off garish layouts for the meantime.
- Do the basics—Proofread for spelling, grammar, and tone, and make sure you follow the instructions of the employer. Pay attention to details; don't cut corners.
- Customize your response—Address the hiring manager directly. Never start a letter with Dear Ma’am or Sir; find out their names in company websites. Include the name of the company and the position you’re applying for in your cover letter/e-mail response.
- Sending an e-mail is a convenient method of communication. However, don't let the sloppy nature and informality of e-mail correspondence seep into your communications. Whether it's e-mailed or written, always maintain a corporate approach in your job.
- Make it easy for the hiring manager—Use your name and the word "resume" in your e-mail header so it's easy to identify. If the employer asks for information—such as character references or writing samples—provide them.
- Focus on what you can bring to the company, not what you want from the job. This is an opportunity to market yourself and stand out from the other candidates. What can you do to make the hiring manager's life easier? What can you contribute to the company?
