In this brief article I would like to share some ideas on how to combat dreaded sinus problems that relate to allergies. Having to go through the process myself, perhaps I can show some understanding to those who are currently suffering from sinus problems and looking for some type of relief in the ever so dreadful allergy seasons. The hunt has been on for an effective way to combat sinus problems and there have been many products that have gone on the market, both prescription and over the counter drugs.

Many have tried anti-histamines to combat the problems, which can be effective, but also they find themselves with a list of side effects that can make them more miserable then they were with allergies. What anti-histamines do is block a chemical called histamine, (if you didn’t get that from the name) that is produced by the body itself when it is suffering from an allergic reaction. It actually causes redness and swelling in the eyes and nose as small blood cells widen because of the released histamine. Therefore anti-histamines are used, but are the cause of sometimes extreme drowsiness, loss of appetite, dry mouth, and blurred vision. They can even make a person dizzy by using it. Personally I didn’t know which was worse, the side effects or the allergies. Either way I was still miserable, and couldn’t really tell a difference with my allergies before and after I had taken the anti-histamines. Anti-histamines can also be dangerous when a person is currently on other medication.

It wasn’t until my doctor prescribed an expensive prescription nasal spray that I began to lose the allergy symptoms that I once suffered from. It had worked, I was so happy to have lost the allergy problems I was suffering from, but then, yep, you guessed it another side effect which I just couldn’t bear; a headache. Yep, that is right, a headache, and not just a little one, but a pounding one every time I did anything the least bit laborious. So there I was, debating again which was worse, the pounding headache or the annoying allergy symptoms that I couldn’t get rid of. Finally I gave up on the expensive nasal spray.

Then I heard about a different nasal spray, all natural, and to my surprise much less expensive than what I had been using. It all starts with a naturally occurring five carbon sugar called xylitol. Xylitol looks and appears just like sugar. It has basically the same chemical structure except for one tiny difference. That difference is what makes xylitol an effective bacteria killer and cleanser. It has been used safely as a dietary supplement because of its similarity in taste with sugar, but it is used effectively in a nasal spray to cleanse the nasal wall and relieve anyone who is suffering from allergy related sinus problems.

Here is how it works. First we have a saline nasal spray, which has been tested and used for a very long time by many allergy combating companies, but then we combine the cleansing effect of xylitol. Once it is used, sinus problem bacteria found in the nasal wall consume the xylitol. The slight difference in the structure of xylitol and regular sugar make it impossible for bacteria to metabolize it and die because they can not do it because of xylitol’s 5 carbon structure. Therefore your nasal wall is essentially washed and cleansed which combats sinus problems and prevents future allergy related symptoms. We always worry about bacteria on our hands and wash them many times a day, but why not worry about the bacteria found in our nose, which is the culprit of so many allergy symptoms and sinus problems that we suffer from.
