Running down the field with pigskin in hand. Hearing the crowd go wild after a touchdown. There's nothing like the thrill of playing football. But one successful football coach walked away from it all to pursue another of his all-consuming passions.
Bill McCartney, former head coach for the University of Colorado, decided to put all of his energy into helping others become acquainted with Christianity. In 1990, the same year he led his team to a national championship, McCartney co-founded Promise Keepers, a Christian-based men's organization. He ended his coaching career five years later.
Even after he was able to touch millions of lives through the Promise Keepers ministries, however, McCartney still missed football. That's when he decided to become involved with American Football Alumni.
American Football Alumni is composed of former high school varsity, collegiate and professional football players and coaches. The organization is a fraternal group of individuals who have a common bond: All of them share an intangible passion for football and all that it means to have played and lived it.
McCartney serves on American Football Alumni's advisory board of directors.
"We are really excited to have Mr. McCartney on our advisory board," said Matthew Totty, president of American Football Alumni. "His addition to our board adds yet another exemplary individual that helps define the kind of organization we've assembled."
