The Steelers offense was horrible for a month, and Ben Roethlisberger looked like he might still be suffering from his motorcycle accident and appendix surgery. There were a lot of questions and speculations about the performance of the team.
Questions like: What happened since Super Bowl XL? Who are these guys in the "black and gold"? Did losing Jerome Bettis, Antwaan Randle El and Kimo Van Olhoffen destroy a Super Bowl championship team? Is Ben Roethlisberger OK after his accident and surgeries? Is Hines Ward recovered enough from his hamstring injury to be an effective receiiver? Is the defense as dominant as they were a year ago? Is Bill Cowher going to stay if the team doesn't make the playoffs.? Can the Steelers turn their season around and make the playoffs?
These were just a few of the questions coming from disappointed Pittsburgh Steelers fans that watched the defending Super Bowl champs start the first month of the 2006 NFL season at 1-3. The Pittsburgh faithful were on the verge of panic when the Kansas City Chiefs came to town.
Then it happened! An offense that had trouble keeping possession of the ball without turning it over several times a game, found the "end zone'. Not once, but six times in a lop-sided 45-7 win. They got an almost flawless performance from quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, who was intercepted nine times in his first three starts with no touchdown passes. He was 16-19 for 238 yards with no interceptions and two touchdowns.
On top of a much needed win, the (3-2) Cincinnati Bengals and the (4-2) Baltimore Ravens both lost and gave the Steelers new life in the division race. A confident Pittsburgh Steelers team is a dangerous team. Watch out, here come the Steelers! There's your answer. www.steelers-fan.com
