Have you ever wondered how the Mother's Day holiday got its start? You may think that it has been around forever but it is actually one of our younger holidays having been around for less than 100 years. So how did this holiday come to be?
Mothers in this country can thank a woman by the name of Anna Jarvis for their holiday. Anna Jarvis' mother had tried to establish a national holiday for mothers in the 19th century but was unsuccessful in her efforts. After her death her daughter Anna had the first mothers day celebration in Philadelphia at St Andrews Methodist Church. The celebration honored mothers both living and dead. After her celebration Anna petitioned congress to have her Holiday made into an official one. Eventually because of her persistence congress made it a national holiday in 1914.
Ironically the holiday's founder would become its greatest opponent. After the holiday became national it quickly became commercialized. Anna would lead protests and even file law suits to stop the big celebrations that she thought were more about money than honoring mothers. She would ultimately say before her death that she regretted ever starting the holiday.
So there you have it. The history behind one of the countries youngest holidays. So next time you buy or receive flowers on Mother's Day you will know what it is all about.
