There is no doubt we need to chit chat a little about the Nortel BCM 50 VoiP Phone System.
For those of you business owners out there who have been contemplating buying a VoiP phone system, this article will shine a light on a new innovative product made specifically for the small and mobile business office.
First, we should talk a little about what VoiP is. More than likely you already know that VoiP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. Essentially, it is a broad description of using a computer network to convert your voice signal to a computer packet (similar to this web page) and moving it from device to device.
With regards to a phone system, it basically means two things.
1.) Networking mutiple phone systems (at seperate sites) is now a snap over the internet. Systems can make internet phone calls back and forth. (it works too!)
2.) With the use of IP phones, you can pretty much take a phone anywhere the internet is and be connected to your switch. Also equates to less cabling if you use all IP phones, as you do not need phone cables any longer.
For the small office, which had been forgotten for some time in the VoiP game, finally a system emerges that is actually affordable and made for the small office.
The Nortel BCM50
Honestly, this is about as sophisticated for the small business office as it gets for the money. Again, Nortel Networks SHINES with the absolute brilliance of features and affordability.
There is no doubt that both Toshiba and Samsung make very good VoIP phone systems. For the better buck, so does Nortel!
Beyond those three, I'm still not a strong believer in most VoiP phone systems. However, after putting in more than a few of these BCM50 phone systems, I know who has the ball game right now.
Nortel shoots back with the BCM 50 VoiP Phone System, which in is out of the box form supports up to 12 digital Norstar phones or Nortel IP Phones (with license of course).
The Base BCM50 will also support up to 4 analog trunk lines and VoiP trunks for networking. You can further add two BCM50 expansion cabinets, each taking a BCM media bay module of your choice.
Further, the Call Pilot voicemail is built right into the main BCM50 unit. You simply purchase licenses to unlock mailboxes and it's ready to go.
You can network from BCM 50 to BCM 50 via VPN or WAN with a bit of simple configuration.
You can extend your office offsite with Nortel IP phones where ever you like. Maybe one at home, maybe three at location B, 3 at location C and 2 at location D. In this mode, all calls phone in through location A and are routed to any IP phone on the network, whether in the building or not.
BCM 50 also gives you ability for the i2050 Softphone, which is a software based phone on your laptop. With wireless broadband internet, your station "literally" goes with you.
The BCM 50 will also network with ANY of the Nortel family VoIP capable phone systems.
These include :
BCM50
BCM 200
BCM 400
IP Enabled Option 11 - 81
Any new IP enabled Nortel switch.
Any BCM will work with ANY Norstar Phone and ALMOST ANY Nortel IP Phone

All in all, when you need small office VoiP phone system, the BCM 50 really delivers. This system can accommodate something like 50 phones at any one location and can integrate with any other Nortel IP system.
As always, this is a COMPLICATED product. It takes a professional to pre engineer, configure, sale and install. We DO NOT recommend self installs!
