For many years, it has been widely circulated that the best way to improve your longevity was to eat fewer calories. So called calorie restricted diets were believed to reduce disease, early death and lead to longer lives. This NYT article reports on the state of play with respect to this theory.
A recent study reported on by the article found that for those test subjects that followed a severe calorie restricted diet benefits in health followed. The calorie restricted group enjoyed reduced body temperature and reduced insulin levels, both considered markers for improved longevity by scientists.
While the study is a positive sign for those that believe that calorie restriction is the holy grail of long life, the study was too short to really prove anything.
In fact no human studies exist that prove the theory. Studies with monkeys do show a strong correlation between reduced calories and longevity.
